What I am concerned about here is the natural environment of the poetic situation and its symbolic meaning. The details of their romance are described. The hero, a young hunter, falls in love with one of the girls from a tribe of hunters (kuravar), who are scaring away parrots from millet fields. In it he notes, "It is well known that the situational element of the Kurinchi-t-thinai is the premarital union of lovers (punarthal). He had written many articles which are well discussed by scholars and one such was ‘Some Observations on Kurinchi Poetry’, published by the Madras of International Institute of Tamil Studies (1966). Once at a press meet at the Russian cultural centre, well-known Tamil writer and founder chairman of Indo-Russian Cultural and Friendship Society D Jayakanthan said, "Our great leaders were good friends with the Soviet Union, and our friendship with Russia symbolises the age-old relationship". The confluence of cultures and languages was a rare gift. The list of publications by him is around 100 devoted to different problems connected with Indian literature, culture, religion. His last unfinished work is the Russian translation of ‘Narrinai’, the first of the eight anthologies of Sangam literature. Always looking to discuss and debate, for 12 years Dubyanskiy conducted an informal seminar on classical Tamil literature in which his former students took part. Later he had visited Chennai a number of times and took part in many lectures in various forums until a couple of years ago. His further learning of Tamil was in Madras University during an internship in 1978-79.

Interested in Indology, he acquired his PhD at the Moscow State University (Institute of Oriental languages -now the Institute of Asian and African Studies) where he learned Tamil and later taught Tamil language and literature for more than 40 years. His work gave academics a different perspective as he focused on classical Tamil literature and on identifying relationships between Tamil and Sanskrit literature. His magnum opus ‘Ritual and Mythological Sources of the Early Tamil Poetry’ is widely read and quoted. Last Wednesday the 79-year-old passed away in Moscow after battling with coronavirus, leaving a void in the Tamil academic fraternity. Tamil has a gravity of expression not found in any language, Russian Tamil scholar Alexander Mikhailovich Dubyanskiy had observed while presenting papers on Tolkappiyam and Silapathikaram at the World Tamil conference in Coimbatore in 2010.
